Background

  • One of the largest mental health care providers for adolescent psychiatric services in Southern Limburg (The Netherlands)  – ~11,000 patients in 2015, with a turnover of >100 € mil
  • Rapid external developments increased pressure on operations:
    • policy reform introducing pro-competitive measures
    • regulatory pressures to shift from (expensive) inpatient to (cheaper) outpatient care
    • new competitors entering the market
    • lower municipal budgets for child and youth mental health services 
  • Rethinking of the current business model to establish (or maintain) operational effectiveness and competitive advantage in the changed market is compelling
