Agenda 2030 – Focus Global Player: The US and Climate Policy

Climate

FIW Bonn’s second Agenda 2030 event on the US current position on Climate Change under Trump – how they got there, implications of staying on course, and what’s to come if the US people not take over the reins to change tack by themselves; with Prof Bindenagel, Prof Sielke, Chris Barrett and Mike Bonanno, part of The Yes Men.

C Barrett: US' plans exiting Paris Agreement, symptom only. No reason to worry; takes 4 y after new presi election. #weltimwandel @FIW_Bonn pic.twitter.com/xUsNQzQTGP

This means that the US is now the only nation on the planet to reject pledge to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. #COP23 https://t.co/L27lHG35MR

The reason the US got D.Trump is the collapse of the left says Mike Bonanno from The Yes Men #weltimwandel

— FIW Bonn (@FIW_Bonn) November 6, 2017

However, overall…

The US is losing its position, after D.Trumps presidency they need to rebuild with help from Europe/ Prof. Bindenagel #weltimwandel

— FIW Bonn (@FIW_Bonn) November 6, 2017

Climate change is a fact – but climate policy depends on party interests says Prof. Sielke #weltimwandel

— FIW Bonn (@FIW_Bonn) November 6, 2017

While the US is the global player in research, a lot of people in the US are skeptical on the existence of climate change #weltimwandel

— FIW Bonn (@FIW_Bonn) November 6, 2017

Where could this come from?

Sielke: Trump/US ignoring sciences linked 2 US culture, religion, history. Innovation seen as magic, wonder; disreg science-base #weltimwandel

— JFKuhlmann (@JF_Kuhlmann) November 6, 2017

But besides research revolving around climate change and Agenda 2030’s sustainable development goals (SDGs), there are even more fields where the US is insufficiently using its power and may as well will lose their advantage over others.

Technology, globalisation and digitalization are global challenges that people in power did not address – Prof. Bindenagel #weltimwandel

— FIW Bonn (@FIW_Bonn) November 6, 2017

The Yes-Men suggests a solution to get the US back on the right course.

@theyesmen: US at rock-bottom. Opportunity to rebuild by means of social participation, engagement – #powertothepeople. #weltimwandel

— JFKuhlmann (@JF_Kuhlmann) November 6, 2017

Also Chriss Barret sees the problem not with missing technological means.

Technology is not the magic we need to face global challenges,we should use existing technologies -Chris Barrett #weltimwandel

— FIW Bonn (@FIW_Bonn) November 6, 2017

Mike Bonanno chips in his opinion on what it rather seems to be about.

The first step to transformation is realising that capitalism exists, says Mike Bonanno. The rest is political decision. #weltimwandel

— FIW Bonn (@FIW_Bonn) November 6, 2017

But where should the first impulse for change come from?

Prof. Sielke: we have to start with the people to make a change regarding climate change. People need to be political active. #weltimwandel

— FIW Bonn (@FIW_Bonn) November 6, 2017

The civil societies and NGOs communities responds are important to the climate policy in the US says Prof. Bindenagel #weltimwandel

— FIW Bonn (@FIW_Bonn) November 6, 2017

We don't need the majority of the population to pressure politics for transformation, but a dedicated few-Mike Bonanno #COP23 #weltimwandel

— FIW Bonn (@FIW_Bonn) November 6, 2017

But, do we have enough time to wait for this process to manifest within the system’s behavior and its actions?

Chris Barrett: We have no time to change systems within a few years as Global warming is an urgent issue #COP23 #weltimwandel

— FIW Bonn (@FIW_Bonn) November 6, 2017

Mike Bonanno: we need anything that works, regardless of ideology, to stop climate change #COP23 #weltimwandel

— FIW Bonn (@FIW_Bonn) November 6, 2017

Hence, even initially mentioned cause for the wrong cause – the Trump administration – can as such be a means for people to become aware of the approaching danger on the horizon…

Bindenagel: Dissatisfaction w/ Trump can be catalyst 4 people to become active, engage. Sielke: needs to be on political lvl! #weltimwandel

— JFKuhlmann (@JF_Kuhlmann) November 6, 2017

#Mindfulness @ individuals & institutional lvl supports implmntation of #ClimateAdaptationMainstreaming measurmnts; incr's #UrbanResilience https://t.co/Zj03WDN0yg

… and spur re-invigoration of democracy in the US!

Trump is the catalyst for social movements in the US, therefore democracy might not be threatened-prof. Bindenagel #COP23 #weltimwandel
