#Bonn's Fear of Heights – Vertical #densification as the only solution for Bonn reaching #urbangrowth boundaries due to #populationgrowth?@DeutschePostDHL #PostTower now a #landmark, already stirred up a #politicaldebate on preservation of the #cityscape vs #highrises, though pic.twitter.com/iWLetrbYkN

.@DeutschePostDHL #PostTower 's choice of location under consideration of #RheinaueBonn as @BundesstadtBonn 's Central Park, central #greenspace, #socialspace for #Bonn, #BadGodesberg, #BonnBeuel. – Sigurd Trommer @VHSBonn

Densification

Reasons for Densification

Preserving character of city under aspects of #populationgrowth, reaching #urbangrowthboundary could also mean #densification; #skyscraper, #highrises – Sigurd Trommer @VHSBonn

— JFKuhlmann (@JF_Kuhlmann) March 12, 2018

Dangers of Horizontal Densification

Under #populationgrowth, alternative to vertical #densifictaion is horizontal densification, which equals changed #landuse, #parks *and*#urbansprawl; detrimental effect on #accessibility, #QualityofLife for urban dwellers – Sigurd Trommer @VHSBonn

— JFKuhlmann (@JF_Kuhlmann) March 12, 2018

Horizontal #urbangrowth, #urbansprawl affects disadvantaged groups #accessibility, #socialaccess most: physical – old people, families w/ children; #socioeconomic – #lowerincomegroups. – Sigurd Trommer @VHSBonn

Potential of Vertical Densification

#MixedUseDevelopment, building #livingunit s on top of #supermarkets (Aldi, Lidl), #tramstops, huge potential for #densifictaion in @BundesstadtBonn. Could also improve #accessibility, #activetransport, reduce #caruse, #traffic; prevent #urbansprawl – Sigurd Trommer @VHSBonn

Qualitative Vertical Building Density

Vertical #densification requires considering different #humanneeds, f.i. by #humanitycentereddesign, safeguarding #livingquality, #privatespace (visual & noise protection; #socialspace still in calling & sight distance) – attendee @VHSBonn

To find high-rise residential buildings that are built accommodating human needs for well-being, you don’t have to look too far away from Bonn. Green roofs and walls are pleasing to the human eye, positively affecting city dwellers’ health and improving cities’ CO2-profile, their microclimate and resilience, due to CO2-storage capacities, cooling effects and water storage characteristics during heavy rainfall. Green infrastructure is one core aspect of Dutch cities future planning endeavors, reconciling built and natural environment in a harmonious way.
