Sustainable Event Management Process Improvements
_________
Concluding 2017 Climate Change Conference, COP23‘s sustainability measures performance and implementation was evaluated based on internal audits and feedback collected from conference attendees, subcontractors and UNFCCC organizers. Valuable lessons learned and key concepts were summarized, and together with actionable steps to improve processes of future sustainable event management made available to UNFCCC, Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUB) and the planning and organization team leading up to COP24 Katowice, Poland.
Key Messages
- Intensify climate action mainstreaming in the jointly drafted event operation plan with contracted companies, e.g. during briefings with caterers/ vendors; within accounting – cross-accounting/ subsidize sustainability measures and effects.
- Design the event environment with human behavior in mind and apply principles at the socio-technical systems interface – make going for the sustainable and green option the default mode operation
- Account for cultural differences in awareness and knowledge of the correct behavior to act in a sustainable way and inform people according- and properly beforehand (f.i. on topics such as waste separation, food choices, use of QR-codes)
At another project during my internship at the UNFCCC secretariat in Bonn, Germany Sustainable Environmental Conference Management System – Briefing Documents was prepared for Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUB).
